In so many ways, New York City has never been stronger.

Our population and economy are growing. Wages are rising, unemployment is low, and we’re the safest big city in America. We remain a beacon to those looking to build a new life, welcoming immigrants to our diverse city and taking a leadership role on global issues.

Yet we face complex challenges to secure our future in a rapidly changing world.

Climate change poses a real threat to our city. Rising seas, intense heat, and bigger storms put residents and buildings at risk. Due to neglect and lack of funding, our subways are unreliable and public services are not up to date. We face new threats from cyber-crime. And rising nationalism and intolerance go against our shared values.

We must address the long-standing problems we have avoided for too long.

Not every New Yorker shares in the city’s prosperity, and many are left behind with limited opportunities to succeed. Rents are rising faster than wages, creating an affordable housing crisis. For too many people, the legacy of racist and discriminatory policies still influence economic opportunities, health, and education.

New York City will rise to the challenge and serve as a model for the world.

We are making progress – enrolling 70,000 children annually in pre-K, winning the fight for a $15/hour minimum wage, building or preserving more than 300,000 units of affordable housing, ensuring every New Yorker who needs mental health support has access through ThriveNYC, introducing a new model of neighborhood policing to make New York City the safest big city in America, and investing billions to modernize public services.

But we must do more to guarantee health care for all, give every child a great education, end our reliance on fossil fuels, and create good-paying jobs. To accomplish these goals, we will ensure safe, thriving neighborhoods, eliminate health inequities due to race, protect the city from climate change, and restore our transportation system to world-class standards.
